‘과정이 결과보다 중요하다’는 말은 진부하다. 게다가 동의하기 쉽지 않다. 아무리 과정이 중요하다 이야기해도 세상은 결과로 평가받기 때문이다.
직장에서 학교에서 열심히 했다고 결과가 좋은 평가를 받지 않는다. 나는 분명 열심히 했지만 연봉협상 때 내 평가와 성과는 낮다. 공부를 열심히 했지만 시험 성적은 그대로다. 이 성적과 월급으로는 내게 다가오는 미래는 뻔하다.
결과가 중요하다고 이야기해 버리면 결과가 나쁜 나 같은 사람은 포기하고 멈춰서 있을 것이다. 과정이 중요하다는 말은 결과가 안 좋은 내게 어른들이나 직장 상사가 나를 움직이게 만들려는 속임수일 뿐이다.
결과는 위치값
과정과 결과의 관계는 게임과 같다. 슈퍼마리오나 소닉 같은 게임이 그렇다. 코인은 길에 놓여 있다. 내 캐릭터가 이동을 해서 코인이 있는 위치에 도착을 하면 얻게 된다. 더 빨리 가고 싶다면 대쉬 버튼을 누르면 더 빨리 이동한다. 점프 버튼을 눌러 높은 곳으로 뛰어 올라가야 한다. 그럼 코인을 얻을 수 있다.
요즘 아이들과 <슈퍼 마리오 원더>라는 게임을 하고 있다. 큰 아이는 시간이 좀 필요했지만 캐릭터를 잘 조정했다. 둘째는 본인이 가고 싶은 방향으로 이동하는 게 아직은 힘들다. 특히 화면까지 이동하면 더 헷갈려한다.
내 마리오가 둘째의 루이지를 만나기 위해서 왼쪽으로 간다. 루이지는 오른쪽으로 오면 마리오를 만날 수 있다. 하지만 마리오가 메인 플레이어라 화면이 마리오를 중심으로 같이 왼쪽으로 이동한다. 루이지가 갑자기 왼쪽으로 이동한다. “루이지 오른쪽으로”라고 불러보지만 마술에 걸린 것 같이 사방으로 방황한다.
곡사포를 쏘은 것과 같다. 옛날에 <포트리스>라는 게임이 있었다. 탱크 같이 직선으로도 쏠 수 있고 곡사포 같이 곡선을 그리며 산 너머의 적을 공격할 수 있다. 포탄을 쏠 때 해야 할 일은 화포의 각도를 정하고 적당한 양의 화약을 넣고 쏘면 탄이 산 너머로 곡선을 그리며 적을 맞춘다. 포탄을 미사일처럼 이리저리 조정하고 싶지만 그럴 수 없다. 상황이 어느 정도 정해져 있는 것 빼곤 볼링, 당구도 이와 비슷하다
내 노력의 양과 방향이 맞다면 결과에 도착하는 일은 그렇게 어려운 일은 아니다. 루이지가 오른쪽으로 움직였다면 마리오를 만났을 것이고 죽지 않았을 것이다.
지난번 테스트 보다 이번 테스트에서 결과가 더 멀어졌다면? 성적이 더 떨어졌다면? 평가가 더 낮아졌다면? 방향을 잘못 잡은 것이다. 성적이 떨어거나 평가가 낮아지지는 않았지만 아주 쪼금 올랐다면? 노력이 부족한 것이다.
시험을 보거나, 제품을 만들거나, 서비스를 해볼 수 있다. 시험, 제품, 서비스는 결과다. 결과에 피드백으로 공부의 방향을, 제품 수정을, 고객의 마음을 알아챌 수 있을 것이다.
내 노력이 헛되지 않게
허튼 곳에 시간과 에너지를 사용하지 않기 위해서 결과가 중요하다. 결과는 따라오는 것이다. 과정이 오지 않으면 결과도 오지 않는다. 그러니 결과를 좌지우지할 수 없다. 내 맘대로 할 수 있는 것은 행동과 노력뿐이다.
내 노력과 시간은 애처롭다. 농땡이도 담겨 있고, 짜증, 답답함, 한심함, 침묵, 기쁨이 담겨있다. 넷플릭스처럼 빨리 감기도 스킵도 안돼서 이런 감정들을 고스란히 느끼며 생방송으로 1열에서 직관한 것이다. 그러니 내 노력이 어찌 애처롭지 않을 수 있을까?
쓰임세가 다를 뿐
타인에게 보상을 받기 위해서 나의 결과물, 서비스를 줘야 한다. 내 과정을 주고 돈을 받는 일이 있을까? 모두들 제품과 서비스를 주고 돈을 받는다. 그러니 세상에선 결과가 중요하다. 나와 타인으로 구성되어 있다. 나 외에 모든 사람들에겐 결과가 중요하다. (그래서 가족이 소중하단 생각이 든다. 나와 같이 내 과정을 봐주는 사람들이기 때문이다)
나는 과정을 조정해서 결과를 만든다. (볼링, 당구, 곡사포처럼) 포탄이 떨어진 곳을 보며 각도를 수정한다. 결국 목표물을 정확하게 맞춘다. 내게도 결과가 중요하다.
우리 모두에게 결과는 중요하다. 타인에게는 결과 자체가 중요하고, 내게는 결과가 주는 피드백이 중요하다. 각자에게 쓰임세가 다르다.
The Real Meaning Behind ‘Results Aren’t Everything’ That Adults Never Explained
“If you think that results are more important than the process, read this.”
The saying that “the process is more important than the results” is cliché. Moreover, it’s not easy to agree with. Despite emphasizing the importance of the process, the world evaluates based on results.
At work or in school, even if you work hard, you may not receive good evaluations. I clearly worked hard, but during salary negotiations, my evaluation and performance are low. I studied hard, but my test scores remain the same. With these grades and salary, the future that awaits me is obvious.
If you simply say that results are important, people like me who have poor results will give up and stop. Adults or bosses often use the idea that the process is important as a way to motivate me when my results are not good.
Results can be likened to checkpoints
The relationship between process and results is similar to a game. Games like Super Mario or Sonic are like that. Coins are placed along the way. If my character moves and arrives at the location where the coin is placed, I obtain it. If you want to go faster, you press the dash button to move faster. You have to press the jump button to jump to higher places. Then you can get the coin. These days, I’ve been playing a game called “Super Mario Wonder” with my kids. The older one needed some time, but managed to control the character well. The younger one finds it difficult to move in the direction he wants. Especially when the screen moves, he gets more confused. My Mario moves left to meet Luigi, the younger one. If Luigi comes from the right, he can meet Mario. But since Mario is the main player, the screen moves left, centered on Mario. Luigi suddenly moves to the left. Even if I call out “Luigi, go right,” he wanders around like he’s under a spell. It’s like firing a cannon. There used to be a game called Fortress. You can shoot straight like a tank, or you can attack enemies beyond the mountains by drawing curves like a cannon. When shooting a cannon, you have to adjust the angle of the cannon, put in the right amount of gunpowder, and shoot. Then the bullet draws a curve beyond the mountain and hits the enemy. You can’t adjust the bullets like missiles. Except for a certain degree of control, bowling and billiards are similar. If the amount and direction of my effort are correct, reaching the result is not that difficult. If Luigi had moved to the right, he would have met Mario and not died. If the results are farther in this test than in the previous test? If the score is lower? If the evaluation is lower? It means you’ve taken the wrong direction. If the score didn’t drop or the evaluation didn’t decrease, but increased slightly? It means there wasn’t enough effort.
You can take a test, make a product, or try a service. Tests, products, and services are results. Through feedback on results, you can determine the direction of study, modify products, and understand customers’ minds.
So that my efforts are not in vain
Results are important to avoid wasting time and energy in vain. Results follow the process. If the process doesn’t come, the result won’t either. So, you can’t control the results. The only thing I can do is act and make efforts.
My efforts and time are pitiful. It contains laziness, irritation, frustration, pity, silence, and joy. It’s like experiencing these emotions live in the front row without being able to fast forward or skip like Netflix. So how can my efforts not be pitiful?
Different purposes
To receive rewards from others, you have to provide your results, products, or services. Can I get paid for providing my process? Everyone provides products and services and gets paid. So, results are important in the world. It’s composed of me and others. For everyone except me, results are important. (That’s why I think family is precious. They are the people who watch my process with me.)
I adjust the process to create results. (Like bowling, billiards, and cannons) I adjust the angle by looking at where the bullet falls. Eventually, I hit the target accurately. Results are important to me too.
Results are important to all of us. For others, the results themselves are important, and for me, the feedback from the results is important. Each has a different purpose.
